Top 50 Favorite/Best Classical – Honorable Mention – Tchaikovsky The Nutcracker
I’m adding Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker to the honorable mentions list. After Swan Lake, in 1876, Tchaikovsky composed The Sleeping Beauty in 1889, and with its success, he ventured for one more ballet before he died. This ballet, again like Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty, infused with gorgeous, entrancing melodies. Interestingly, this ballet also did not see much success right away, only from the 1960s onward especially in the United States. Nowadays, almost all ballet companies have Nutcracker on their season, because it’s the biggest money maker.

The story is based off an Alexandre Dumas adaptation called The Tale of a Nutcracker. Dumas adapted it from The Nutcracker and the Mouse King by E.T.A. Hoffmann. It’s a pleasant little children’s tale that fits right in with our modern take on Christmas, which is why it is so popular these days. Also helps that the music is infectiously good and pleasant. The first half of the ballet takes place in real life, at a Christmas Eve family gathering, and the second half takes place in the magical world with all the different dances that everyone knows. I love the charm of the Coffee Dance personally. Here’s a good dance of the Coffee, though I prefer the music to be faster.
And here’s a great recent version of the full ballet. Enjoy!
