Top 50 Favorite/Best Classical – Honorable Mention – Mussorgsky Pictures at an Exhibition

Mussorgsky appears one last time on my Top 50 Favorite/Best Classical with an honorable mention for his Pictures at an Exhibition suite for piano. Most people know this suite from the incredible orchestration by Maurice Ravel.  Whether on the piano or in Ravel’s orchestration, Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition is a serious, contemplative, thoughtful, reflective piece of work that, very much, deserves its accolades.

My favorite of the movements is the Old Castle, such a mood setting, gentle composition, particularly with Ravel’s orchestration. Ravel uses an alto saxophone for the main theme, and it is perfect.

The setting for the suite is so simple and straight forward. Mussorgsky starts with a Promenade that is repeated frequently throughout, interspersed in-between the reflections of art. Each work is unique in its own and the whole Pictures feels like a satisfying journey through an art gallery.

Here is the Chicago Symphony led by Sir Georg Solti with a great version of the orchestral version. Enjoy!
