Top 50 Favorite/Best Classical – Honorable Mention – Wolfe Fire in My Mouth

The final Honorable Mention goes to Julia Wolfe for her recent composition, Fire in My Mouth, premiered at the New York Philharmonic in January 2019. Julia Wolfe is a composer who incorporates a number of different kinds of techniques in her compositions, including minimalism, extended techniques and electronic sounds and electronic instruments. All the styles are readily audible in this amazing work.

The idea for Fire in My Mouth came from a factory fire in 1911 called the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, which was one of the deadliest industrial disasters in US history, killing 123 women and girls and 23 men. Most of the dead were young Italian and Jewish immigrant women. As Julia Wolfe writes for the program notes:

“I had been thinking about immigrant women in the workforce at the turn of the century. They fled their homelands to escape poverty and persecution. The garment workers arrived to these shores with sewing skills. Many of the women wound up working on these huge factory floors — hundreds of women sitting at sewing machines. Fire in my mouth tells the story of the women who persevered and endured challenging conditions, women who led the fight for reform in the workplace.” –https://juliawolfemusic.com/music/fire-in-my-mouth

The piece is structured as four movements covering four topics related to the disaster. The first one paints the picture of the immigrants coming to America for work and freedom. The second one uses music and voice to describe the conditions of the factory. The third movement delves into the protests both before and after the fire that devastated the factory. And the fourth movement renders graphically the devastation of the fire upon the women workers.

There are not yet full video recordings of this piece. However, here is the promotional piece from the New York Philharmonic about the concert which includes some of the music.
